ROGER WILLIAMS (1603 - 1684) was born in England and there became a Puritan. He came to America where he preached in the colonies and taught religious freedom and separation of church and state. He was banished from Salem for his convictions and went to Rhode Island to found the colony of Providence. At this time he became a "Baptist" and was baptized by immersion. He is known as the founder of the first Baptist church to exist. BIBLIOGRAPHY Glipin, W. Clark. The Millenarian Piety of Roger Williams. University of Chicago Press, 1979 Winslow, Ola Elizabeth.
