Board of Directors

Jim and Ruth Brinker

Board Chairman

Jim and Ruth Brinker live in the Twin Cities where they home educate their three daughters. They love homeschooling because it provides more time together as a family and the flexibility to educate their children as God leads them. The Brinkers enjoy traveling around the United States learning about history and geography and trying regional restaurants. Jim grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. He is an account manager for an electronic distributor. In his spare time, Jim likes to cook, read, do household projects and volunteer in grassroots politics. Ruth has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Northwestern College in Roseville, Minnesota. Besides being a homeschool mom, she loves volunteering with the girls’ activities and serving as a children’s ministry coordinator at their church. They are members of a local support group, Northern Lights Home School Association, where Ruth served previously as director. The Brinkers joined the MÂCHÉ Board of Directors in fall of 2009. They are excited for the opportunity that God has given them to serve other homeschoolers and learn from them. Jim and Ruth enjoy working with MÂCHÉ’s social media, commencement and support group encouragement.

Kion and Eileen Hoffman

Board Members

Kion and Eileen met while attending Oak Hills Bible College in Bemidji, Minnesota. Kion is a Family Practice Physician in Deer River. Eileen has a Bachelors of Science degree in Applied Psychology. When their first child was born in 1985, they began homeschooling and have homeschooled all five of their children through high school. In 1996, they helped start and lead the Pioneers Homeschool Support Group in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. They have served as MÂCHÉ’s North East Liaisons for the last five years. Kion and Eileen joined the MÂCHÉ Board of Directors in 2012. Kion and Eileen have a passion for discipleship and the Word of God. Homeschooling is the natural outworking of that passion in their family. They desire to encourage the next generation of homeschoolers to make Jesus Christ the firm foundation of their families and their homeschools. Kion and Eileen live in northern Minnesota near Grand Rapids and attend the Calvary Chapel Church in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.  Kion enjoys pheasant hunting and white water canoeing with their children; Eileen enoys everything history, reading, and quilting. Their first grandchild was born in 2010 - a little girl named Hope.

John and Wendy Tuma

Legislative Liaison, Secretary

John’s career began as an attorney for a firm in the Northfield area. In 1991, he opened his own solo practice and Wendy stepped in to assist him. In 1994 John entered the political arena when he was elected State Representative for their district and served in office for four consecutive terms. As a Representative, John had the honor of chairing the Crime Prevention Committee and was one of the chief authors of the state’s terrorist bill which was developed as a result of the September 11th terrorist attack. In 2000, John made the choice to retire from his legislative position in order to spend more time with his family. In 2002, John and Wendy launched what is now Tuma Consulting Corporation. In that role, John remains active at the Capitol as a legislative consultant and they continue to work together with his consulting business. The desire to give their children a biblical foundation, their need for a flexible schedule in order to be able to spend time together as a family, as well as the desire to be very involved in what their children were learning led them to homeschool their children. John and Wendy are humbled to have been a part of the MÂCHÉ Board since 2003.  Both feel God has called them to be a part of this ministry to homeschooling families and they enjoy working on legislative and legal issues, editing the MÂCHÉ Handbook and getting to know homeschoolers throughout the state. When they do have a spare minute, John enjoys working on home projects, fishing or camping; Wendy likes to settle in with a good book, a cup of tea, some quilting and maybe a nap.

Jim and Julie Walter

Jim and Julie Walter were introduced to home education in 1988 by some friends. With the assistance of MÂCHÉ, they started their homeschool journey when their oldest child was four years old. Over the years, their five oldest children have graduated from their private, independent homeschool. Jim and Julie continue to home educate their four other children – their youngest is eleven years old. It is their desire to encourage and assist families that have chosen to home educate their children. They are board members in a homeschool support group (REACH) in the Moorhead, Minnesota, area. They were MÂCHÉ liaisons for the northwestern part of the state until they joined the MÂCHÉ Board of Directors in November of 2011. Jim is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie and has worked in the telecommunications field since his graduation. He has held the position of President/CEO of a telecommunications company in Moorhead since 1999. He also serves on several boards in the communications field. During the first five years of their marriage, Julie worked as a receptionist, secretary, and as a tutor for children in public school. When their first child was born, she chose to stay home and ran a home day care for five years. Their family has lived on a hobby ranch near Pelican Rapids for the past fourteen years.
