Nationwide, more and more families are choosing to home school their children each year, and the fastest growing segment of the home school movement is African-Americans, experts say. Some 220,000 black children are home-schooled, according to one estimate.  ~ Garrett Tenney at FoxNews.com

One huge blessing of home education is that you are able to choose the requirements for your school. The Minnesota state law only specifies what courses need to be covered each year. You decide what curriculum you will use, the time frame for each course and what your requirements will be for your students.

Summer is a great time to relax and read your favorite book.  What are some books you would recommend and why? What are your favorite books to read to your children?

Please post.  We would love to hear from you!   Maybe someone will find a book to read that is not on their list.

I am a bookworm and I live with a family of bookworms.  I purposely encouraged them to be bookworms because reading is not only enjoyable but also educational.  Reading takes us to many places right from the comfort of our favorite chair.  Some of our books have traveled with us, adding yet another layer of memories to the story.  For those of us who homeschool, having books within reach is often necessary for our school days, rainy days and lying around in the sun days.

A Man of Character

“Providence directed me to send a dispatch 3 days march across the wilderness to Yellow Lake with a proposal to Miss Hester Crooks. The seventh day the messenger brought me an affirmative and the next day I packed up my affects, swung my pack and marched.”*

We are not heroes.  We are not a “model homeschool family” - an example of how to finally get it right! Personally, if I heard that someone was going to be speaking who had perfected the art of homeschooling and had accomplished building an “ideal family,” I’d run the other way!  I wouldn’t be able to relate.
