JOHN CHALMERS (1841 - 1901) was born in Ardishaig, Argyllshire. He grew up in a Presbyterian church where a Sunday School teacher instilled him with a desire to work with cannibals. First he went to Rarotonga, but found it too civilized for his tastes. Finally, he left for New Guinea under the auspices of the London Missionary Society. After a fruitful work there he was martyred and eaten by cannibals who attacked him as he attempted to move to a new area.
