JOHN PECK (1789 - 1858) was born in Connecticut. He felt called to preach at an early age, and after being licensed to do so, he began traveling throughout the mid-west, especially the Mississippi Valley as a Baptist Missionary. His work was founding Sunday Schools. He founded such institutions as the American Baptist Home Mission Society, and the A. B. Publication Society. He also published the"Pioneer" in 1829, which was the first Baptist journal in the mid-west. He was also a prolific author and among his works is "The Life of Daniel Boone." In 1852 , he was awarded a doctorate degree in Systematic Theology from Harvard for his accomplishments in the area of Christian education.
