MATTHEW SIMPSON (1811 - 1884) reigned as King of the American pulpit during the late 19th century. He was born in Cadiz, Ohio. In his youth he studied Latin and Greek. In 1833 he became a practicing physician. His strong preaching combined with an ardent stand against slavery made him fast friends with Abe Lincoln. Later in his life he became president of what is now De Paul University. Matthew Simpson was a giant among the preachers of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
