JOHN WESLEY (1703 - 1791) the founder of the Methodist movement, was born in England to devout parents. Wesley received an M. A. degree from Oxford in 1727. John, although he was not converted to Christ, served as a deacon of the Anglican Church and even went to America as a missionary to Indians. Upon his return to England he was converted to Christ and began to preach. In the course of his life, John Wesley preached 42,000 sermons. He and his brother Charles are also noted for their contributions to hymnody.
