GEORGE WHITEFIELD (1714 - 1770) was the son of a saloon keeper. He was born in England. He loved reading and acting, so he entered Oxford. Before his conversion he "buddied up" with John and Charles Wesley previous to John's conversion, and what emerged was a form of strict legalism. As a result of legalistic fasting, he collapsed, and upon his recovery experienced true salvation. He traveled to America as a missionary, and upon his return to England he found it difficult to obtain a pulpit because of his stand on drinking, etc.. He is remembers as one of th most influential preachers of all time.
