John Williams (1796 - ?) was born in Tottenham, London. He was converted to Christ at the age of 20. Williams received a burden to proclaim Christ to the South Sea Islands after hearing his minister speak on the subject. He lft for Tahiti with the London Missionary Society in 1817. The nature of the islands necessitated that he build several ships to facilitate transportation. One of his major accomplishments was to translate the New Testament into Rarotongan. After 18 years on the islands, he finally returned to London to promote his work. Upon return to the islands he was killed by the natives, probably mistaken as a british white man who had visted the islands in his absence.
