Rousseau moved the lines from grace and unity to nature and freedom. This presupposition led to determinism. Determinism is simply the unity of cause and effect. Gogan painted Rousseau’s idea of freedom with a beautiful Tahitian young girl and a dying old woman, showing there is no hope. This painting shows clearly that autonomous freedom by itself is a dead end street. B. F. Skinner carried it further by saying that man, in order to be free, must give up his freedom to a group of experts.
