2019 MÂCHÉ Convention
April 11, 2019 @ 8:00 am - April 13, 2019 @ 5:30 pm
2019 MÂCHÉ Convention
April 11-13, 2019 ~ RiverCentre, St. Paul MN
Home education has changed over the years. What was once a "pioneer" movement to disciple and train our children in Godliness has mainstreamed into something that more closely resembles public school at home. Though academics are very important, there is so much more to home education than that. The very heart of home education can easily be replaced with good things, without retaining the best things.
The 2019 MÂCHÉ Convention is actually three events combined into one weekend. Each is a distinctly different event with a different focus; attendees should register separately for each event that they intend to attend. You will learn more about them below.
Our Convention Theme is "Giving All Diligence." Our superb speakers and informative exhibitors (many of them new) will energize you with your endeavors and will offer you significant insight on building Godly character in your children ... and in yourselves. Won't you join us this year! (Registration begins January 1, 2019.)
"Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are in you and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (Second Peter 1:5-8)
“Every year we look forward to going to MACHE Convention. It is one of the highlights of our year! We wish others would see the benefits and come. There are far too many that are not connected well with others on this journey, and may become discouraged. Each year is a refreshing time, and we love to be challenged and connect with others that are on a similar path with their family.” ~Michelle
“The MACHE conference has been so helpful over the years. About 8 years ago, my husband and I attended our first one, feeling a God-placed burden on our hearts to homeschool and not having a clue how to get started. Our call to homeschool was affirmed through that first conference. We realized we were not alone as we saw thousands of other homeschool parents. We took classes that gave us the tools to get started. Today we still attend the conference. The encouragement and resources provided every year can help even experienced homeschool families. Thanks MACHE for a job well done!!” ~Jenny
“Our 1st conference — gave us the confidence and encouragement we needed to get started on our home education journey with our family!!! Thank you for taking the time to organize this conference; it was vital to us, and my husband and I had a great time together!” ~Natalie
“I am always so-o-o-o-o encouraged and uplifted after going to MACHE!!!! It's as if the Lord directs me to what I most need to hear from each speaker I choose to attend!!! Already planning next year's event!” ~Carolyn
“We have been attending the Mache conference for 10 years. This year's conference not only gave us the information we needed to homeschool through high school but also encouraged and challenged us in our spiritual journey as individuals and family leaders as well. Thank you Mache for being faithful in supporting our families on our homeschool journeys.” ~Amanda
“My husband and I look forward to attending the MACHE Conference together every year. It helps us refocus on our homeschooling goals and find new solutions for areas we'd like to improve in our family and our homeschool. We are always encouraged by the speakers and in seeing all the other homeschooling families represented there! It helps us realize that we are not alone!” ~Wendy
“Each year the MACHE conference brings encouragement, refreshment, and reinvigoration to the homeschooling family. We are inspired by great speakers and encouraged by seeing the greater homeschooling community brought together. It is a blessing to be a part of a great organization with a noble vision for educating our children in a Christ-centered environment — HOME. This year we were able to share the experience with a couple of our daughters. They were inspired and amazed by the whole conference. Thank you for all your hard work at making the conference happen every year! We know it is no small feat.” ~Jason & Rebecca
Three events in one Convention weekend!
THURSDAY SESSIONS ...............
Taking that first step into home education can be quite unnerving! Teaching anything past the basic reading, 'writing, and 'arithmetic can be rather intimidating, to say the least! Working with struggling learners can be totally exhausting because of the enormous amount of energy that is constantly required. Let us encourage you in these three important topics - beginning, high school, and struggling learners. (Thursday, April 11)
LEADERSHIP FORUM .................
Leaders of homeschool support groups and co-ops face unique challenges. Not only are they homeschooling their own children and keeping their homes running smoothly, but they are also leading a group of families, which means planning, scheduling, organizing, communicating, and making decisions. This event is intended to be an enjoyable and instructional time for leaders. Your whole board is welcome to attend! (Thursday, April 11)
CONFERENCE .............................
Our objective as home educating parents is to prepare faithful generations for Godly leadership. Each child is distinctively created; each family is unique. In the turbulent milieu of our present-day society, it is imperative that we train our children ... and ourselves ... to demonstrate the character of Jesus Christ through faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. (Friday / Saturday, April 12-13)
CONFERENCE "Extras" ...............
CONFERENCE registrants are also able to attend MÂCHÉ's Exhibit Hall, Used Curricula Sale, Mentors' Booth, Silent Auction, Keynote Sessions, Student Preludes, Young Entrepreneurs, Special Sessions, Teen Track, and much more.

REGISTER FOR THE CONFERENCE
- CHILDREN AND INFANTS
The MÂCHÉ Convention weekend is designed primarily for support and encouragement for parents. Many home educating parents use this weekend as an annual getaway as a couple. However, we understand that some parents desire to bring their children and as long as the children are not distracting to attendees in workshops, and stay with their parents at all times, we welcome them. That said, be aware that there are no supervised activities for children under 13 years of age. As a courtesy, we would suggest that small children sit on parents’ laps or on the floor until the workshop begins, then they can take seats if any are still available.
- GRANDPARENTS
Grandparents are a vital part of your children’s home education and are invited to attend the convention to learn as much as they can about home education. Grandparents who are not home educating their own children may attend the conference at no charge with their registered children. Register grandparents on your registration form. Their name tags will be in the same envelope as yours.
- MISSIONARIES
Missionaries who are on deputation and have never attended a MÂCHÉ conference may attend as MÂCHÉ’s guests at no charge. Send an official prayer card (or newsletter) and a letter of request to attend the conference (include email and phone number) to Missionary Conference Registration, PO Box 32308, Fridley, MN 55432 or email to executive.director@mache.org. Letters must be received no later than March 15, 2018. Each missionary will receive a phone call and email confirmation after the information has been reviewed.
- PASTORS
Pastors who are not home educating their own children and have never attended a MÂCHÉ conference may attend at no charge. Using official church stationery (including email and phone number), send a written request to attend the MÂCHÉ conference. Mail to Pastor Conference Registration, PO Box 32308, Fridley, MN 55432 or email to executive.director@mache.org. Letters must be received no later than March 16, 2018. Each pastor will be contacted by MÂCHÉ after his information has been received.
- VOLUNTEER SCHOLARSHIPS
MÂCHÉ is pleased to provide registration credit to adults and students who are 16 years of age or older and are willing to serve at least six hours during the conference. Volunteers receive a $64 credit toward their husband/wife conference registration fee ($32 credit toward their husband/wife Thursday Sessions fee; $30 credit toward their student registration fee). This credit amount is the equivalent of the “early bird” member registration fee. Volunteer early so that we will know how to plan.
PREPARE FOR THE CONFERENCE
- HANDOUTS
To find the handouts for the 2019 MÂCHÉ workshops (excluding exhibitor workshops), click “Workshop Schedule,” find the appropriate session and then the appropriate workshop, then click “Handout” located below the workshop description. Handouts are available online only, April 1 through May 31. Remember to download and print the handouts of the workshops you want to attend ahead of time and bring them with you to the conference. Workshop handouts will NOT be available in the workshop sessions.
- SPECIAL ASSISTANCE
If you need an ASL interpreter, please inform MÂCHÉ when you register online and no later than March 16. After March 16, if you request an interpreter, you will need to join the scheduled interpreters for the workshops already assigned.
If you need a wheelchair, please inform MÂCHÉ when you register online and no later than March 16. This will allow us enough time to make the necessary arrangements.
If you are unable to carry your child or items during the convention weekend due to a medical condition and need to use your rolled cart, please inform MÂCHÉ when registering online so necessary arrangements can be made to facilitate your rolled cart usage.
- VENUE INFORMATION
You will find a variety of maps showing how to get around Saint Paul, Minnesota, including parking, hotels, skyways, and more at https://www.visitsaintpaul.com/discover-saint-paul/getting-here/maps/.
EXPERIENCE THE CONFERENCE
- ADVERTISERS/SPONSORS
We are very appreciative of our advertisers and sponsors who help defray our convention costs. Please make a special effort to patronize the businesses that placed ads in our program booklet or sponsored part of the conference event and thank them for supporting home education in Minnesota.
- AUDIO RECORDINGS
MÂCHÉ workshops will be audio-recorded and available for purchase as MP3 downloads or Audio CDs. Audio CD disks will be mailed within two weeks. MP3 downloads will be available shortly after the convention is over. PLEASE NOTE: MP3 Downloads will remain in your account for six months or two download attempts, whichever comes first. Once they expire, they will no longer be available to you and you will need to purchase them again. ALSO, because of special security measures implemented by Apple, Inc. Corporation, MP3 downloads need to be downloaded to a Mac or PC first and then synced to Apple devices using iTunes. Following the convention, all audios may be purchased from the MÂCHÉ Online Store. No personal audio/video recording devices are allowed onsite for the purpose of recording the workshops.
- COAT/BOOK CHECK
There is a nominal fee to store your coats and purchases in a safe place while you attend the conference. Carts, strollers, or roller luggage need to be stored in “Coat/Book Check” and may be used to hold your belongings while you attend workshops or do more shopping. Rolled carts and strollers cannot be used on the convention premises.
- CONFERENCE HOURS
Registration, used curriculum, and the exhibit hall doors open at 8:00 AM and close at 5:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. PLEASE NOTE: the Friday Evening Keynote Session begins at 6:30 PM and is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
- EXHIBIT HALL PROTOCOL
We are thankful for each exhibitor in our exhibit hall and hope that you will take time to say a special thank you to them for coming! Many of the homeschool exhibitors in our hall are experts in their field and are willing to take extra time to explain their various products for you in great depth. We encourage you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to gain knowledge and information.
When an exhibitor takes the time and effort to explain a product or give you some sage advice and you decide to buy the product, we strongly encourage you to buy your product from that person instead of making your purchase elsewhere to save a little money. Not only does this help preserve an atmosphere of trust and sharing, it also encourages the return of knowledgeable, well-established exhibitors to our annual conference.
MÂCHÉ does not offer “Exhibit Hall Only” passes. Only registered attendees wearing their own name tags may enter the exhibit hall.
It is a good idea to bring plenty of cash with you, as several exhibitors who have delightful home education products do not accept credit cards.
- FULL WORKSHOPS
When workshop rooms are full, MÂCHÉ must close the doors and not let anyone else enter the room. If you see a sign posted “Full” outside of a workshop room, please find another workshop where there is still plenty of room. If we allow more people in a room than it’s posted limit, the fire marshal will close the entire convention down. Plan to arrive early to the session you are most interested in attending. We ask that you do not save seats, as a courtesy to others who took the effort to arrive early like you did.
- NAME TAGS
Your name tags will be available for pick up when you arrive at the convention. Name tags are the admittance “tickets” to the convention and must be worn at all times and by the person whose name is printed on it. If lost or forgotten, replacement name tags are $5.
SAINT PAUL HOST HOTELS
MÂCHÉ has negotiated reduced rates with the following Saint Paul hotels for the 2019 MÂCHÉ Convention. To receive the reduced rates, you must specify that you are attending the MÂCHÉ convention. Ask for a confirmation number. A lodging tax will be added to each of the guaranteed rates.
When you call to make a reservation and the desk attendant is not able to answer the phone right away, your call may be transferred to their national office. The national offices may not be aware of the arrangements that the hotels have made with MÂCHÉ. Try calling again until you can talk to someone in the St. Paul hotel who is familiar with the MÂCHÉ convention special rates.

2019 MÂCHÉ Convention Speakers!
Mark Beck is a homeschool graduate with a degree in Biblical and Theological Studies from the University of Northwestern - St. Paul. He met his wife BriAnn at college and married her just in time to tag along with each other to Cameroon, Africa, where they taught missionary kids for a year and a half with Wycliffe Bible Translators. In 2013, a few years after returning to Minnesota, Mark founded Josiah’s Gift, a ministry of memorizing the Word of God and bringing it to life through powerful recitations. So far, he has memorized over thirteen books of the Bible and speaks at camps, churches, conferences, and in living rooms, sharing God’s Word and training others to take it to heart. His four children (age 8 on down) love to memorize along with him and call his recitations “Bible Stories from Daddy’s Heart.” Memorization in their household is a full-contact sport and frequently involves swords, tutus, and hanging upside down off the furniture.

Nancy Bjorkman began as the ultimate homeschool skeptic. But now, after 20+ years teaching her own four children, she has become the “go-to lady” for many and a champion of the cause. She is a certified teacher and has spoken at homeschool conferences in over 10 states where she is known for her enthusiasm, energy, and encouragement. Having graduated all of her children, Nancy finds it exciting to have graduated herself to being a mentor for other homeschool families. Though she stays busy as a bookstore owner, mentor, and speaker, her favorite times are spent with her growing family (grandkids - yeah!). She and her husband own HEPPNER’S LEGACY, a homeschool store in Elk River, Minnesota, where they delight in ministering to the unique needs of families year round, and where parents say, “Come for the books. Stay for the therapy.™”

He was then accepted into pilot training and eventually flew F-16 fighters. Chuck is the inventor/co-inventor on twelve patents for products that are distributed and sold nationally and internationally. Chuck and his wife, Andrea, have homeschooled for the past twenty-five years. In addition to writing on various websites and e-newsletters, Chuck is the author of sixteen books which comprise The Kingdom Series, The Knights of Arrethtrae series, The Wars of the Realm trilogy, and Call to Arms: The Guts and Glory of Courageous Fatherhood. TEEN TRACK #1: WORKSHOPS
Teacher: Dr. Lianna Callentine
Room: Ballroom G
- EARLY SESSION: The EYES: Window into the Soul
(Dissection Lab) They say the eyes are the window to the soul. In this interactive workshop you will peer into a real eye. Learn how the eye and brain cooperate in amazing teamwork. Each participant will receive a certificate for lab hour documentation. In addition, each student will take home a science kit to continue their exploration at home (Included in the workshop registration fee).
- SESSION 1: The Electrifying NERVOUS SYSTEM Interactive Workshop
(Dissection Lab) Thinking, crying, breathing, running, skipping, singing, smiling, itching, sneezing, and your beating heart — all of these activities have one thing in common, your brain. Tipping the scales at a mere 3 pounds, it is the integral organ of your body. This interactive engaging workshop will pick your brain and transport you into the fascinating and complex world of brain anatomy and physiology. See an actual brain dissection. Dr. Callentine brings the brain to life drawing you into the world of neuroscience as only a doctor can. Each participant will receive a certificate for lab hour documentation. In addition, each student will take home a science kit to continue to pick their brains at home (Included in the workshop registration fee.)
- SESSION 2: The Breathtaking RESPIRATORY Interactive Workshop
(Dissection Lab) Inhale. Exhale. The life-sustaining process of breathing is vital to the maintenance of all organs in the body. Embark on a voyage with Dr. Callentine, your tour guide, through the lungs. In this interactive hands-on lab, you will observe a lung dissection and see live demonstrations on lung functions.
- SESSION 3: The Complex CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Hands-on Workshop
(Dissection Lab) Our heart beats passionately. It never stops. It never rests. It works around the clock, day and night. We will journey into a whole new dimension. First, we will take a historical excursion through the pages of time and see how our knowledge of the circulatory system has expanded. We will learn all about blood, where it comes from, and how clots develop. Next, we will wade through the life-giving fluid that courses through the highways of your body. We will enter the atrium of the heart and peer into the heart’s many rooms. Witness the wonderful cooperation of our heart with our lungs. Peer into the chambers of a real heart and hold this amazing muscle in your hands.
- SESSION 4: Life Lessons from Courtside
As a former collegiate athlete, there are many lessons I received on the athletic field that transfer over to life lessons. It is through life’s struggles, successes, and failures that we gain wisdom, deepen our relationships, and grow in our faith.
- SESSIONS 5-6: Diagnosis 101
The Hippocratic Oath is the vow a doctor makes when he/she enters the field of medicine. An excerpt taken from this oath states: “I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of over treatment and therapeutic nihilism. I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug.” Do you have what it takes to be a doctor? Walk through a medical case scenario in which you will apply your investigative skills to manage your patients. Learn about a disease that affects more than 38 million Americans. In this hands-on lab investigation, you will study causes of the disease, take a medical history, perform an exam, perform standard diagnostic tests, and develop a treatment plan for your patients. This is a three hour workshop.
TEEN TRACK #2
Tough Questions Teens Ask
Teacher: Chuck Black (The Kingdom Series)
Fee: $40
Maximum student attendees: 300
Popular author and speaker, Chuck Black, will be presenting a series of six workshops dealing with the tough questions that today's teens face daily, from “How do I know that the Bible is true?” to “Why do my parents always bug me about being on my iPhone too much?”
Topics covered are relevant to Christian teens in today’s world. For more information about the Teen Track #2 workshop descriptions, scroll to the bottom of this page.

- Practical Apologetics for Teens
- Dealing with Doubt: Bullet-proofing Your Armor
- The Battle Within: Understanding the Raging War between Spirit and Flesh and How to Live in Victory
- Escapism: How to Avoid the Enemy’s Snares
- Defending your Faith: Building on the Cornerstone of Jesus Christ
- Waiting for God to Speak
Students will leave this track with their faith challenged, but stronger; with answers to the tough questions they ask themselves; and with the wisdom and courage to stand alone in tough situations.
Students who choose this teen track option should plan to attend all six workshops. It will follow the same schedule as their parents’ schedule.
Space is limited. Register Early!
TEEN TRACK #2: WORKSHOPS
Teacher: Chuck Black
Room: Ballroom H
- SESSION 1: Practical Apologetics for Teens
The deception of the Enemy in our modern world seems overwhelming at times, especially for young people. Is there scientific evidence for God? Does faith deny logic and reason? Chuck tackles these challenging questions and offers solid answers through practical apologetics. Equip yourself using the synergy between scripture, science, technology, logic and reason to stand against the onslaught of deception the world will throw at you.
- SESSION 2: Dealing with Doubt: Bullet-Proofing Your Armor
At fourteen years old I faced an episode of doubt in my life that lasted for fourteen years. Because of it I could not claim God’s Word as infallible nor witness boldly to anyone seeking answers about Jesus Christ. God preserved my faith through it all, but much was lost to those years lived in flimsy faith. It doesn’t have to be so for Christian teens today. Teens can learn how to equip, prepare, and launch as soldiers of faith into the world, fully capable of standing against the spiritual attacks and waves of doubt that they will often face. Discover how to face doubt and overcome one of the Enemy's most disarming tactics. Learn a few basic principles on how to overcome and live a faith-filled life for the King!
- SESSION 3: The Battle Within: Understanding the Raging War Between Spirit and Flesh, and How to Live in Victory
One of the most confusing issues a teen will face is the war within between their spirit and their flesh. This war and its consequences are personal and will determine a teen's effectiveness as a believer. Understanding the biblical basis for this battle is paramount for living a victorious, joyful and faith-filled life. Teens will discover the power of the Spirit that lives within and cause the Enemy and his minions to tremble.
- SESSION 4: Escapism: How to Avoid the Enemy's Snares
In today’s technology culture, the enemy’s lure of our young people’s minds to escape into an artificial world is great. As the line between reality and simulation blurs, the stronghold of escapism becomes more and more powerful. Apathy and self-indulgence are two destructive consequences that lead to broken relationships, broken homes, and broken hearts. Teens can learn practical ways to help keep from getting caught in the dangerous snare of escapism.
- SESSION 5: Defending Your Faith: Building on the Cornerstone of Jesus Christ
Being ready to give an answer to anyone that asks of the hope that lies within you sounds easier than it is, especially when someone asks some really tough questions like "If Daniel went to heaven then why did Jesus have to die on the cross?" and, "If Daniel didn't need Jesus then why do I?" This session will give teens solid answers that will build their own faith and give them confidence as they fulfill their obligation to share the truth of Jesus Christ with this world. The primary Scripture reference for this session is Luke 16.
- SESSION 6: Waiting for God to Speak
There are times when it seems as if God is silent...as if our prayers for direction and guidance are bouncing off the ceiling. How do we as servants of the Most High decide the ‘whats’ and ‘whens’ during these times? What does God expect of us and what does scripture say about how to move on? Chuck discusses the lessons he’s learned about what to do while waiting for God to speak.

VOLUNTEER
Give back to an organization that has encouraged and equipped Minnesota home educators in many ways over the last 35 years! Mingle with some of the best people in the world! Make new friends. Share in our ministry to home educators around the state.
If you are an adult or teen (16 years or older), come join our convention committee team as a volunteer. In exchange for serving six hours during the convention, MÂCHÉ volunteers will receive a $64 credit toward their husband/wife convention registration if working during the conference ($32 credit toward their husband/wife Thursday Sessions registration fee if working during the Thursday Sessions; or if a student, a $30 credit toward their student registration fee). This credit amount is the equivalent of the “early bird” member registration fee.
Prerequisites to serve as a volunteer are ...
- Have a current MÂCHÉ membership (through April 13, 2019).
- Have attended at least one previous MÂCHÉ conference.
MÂCHÉ will consider requests for specific areas of volunteer service, but will assign volunteers where they are needed most.
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
Room Host/Hostess: Two people are assigned to one workshop room for one day (three workshops) to assist speakers by helping them get set up, introducing them, opening the session with prayer, starting/ending the session on time, and helping with normal crowd control in the workshop room. When the workshop is not in session, the volunteer is free to visit the exhibit hall etc., as long as he/she is back to the room in time to greet the next speaker.
Security: Dads, young adult men, and sometimes a few moms are placed in strategic areas to help with crowd control, check for name tags (to make sure attendees are registered and are wearing their tags), report any unusual issues, and facilitate attendee safety. In emergencies, they may be called on to assist the onsite physician or peace officer as needed.
Students: Students age 16 and older will initially be assigned to help in Coat/Book Check. This job entails checking in/checking out roller luggage/strollers and items that attendees want to store during the conference, as well as keeping the location neat and organized. During slow times a student may be called upon to help in other areas like pre-registration, silent auction, exhibit hall, etc.
DRESS GUIDELINES
As a volunteer, you will be representing MÂCHÉ and the homeschool community in general. For this reason and because attendees at the conference share a wide variety of convictions about clothing, we ask that all volunteers respectfully follow a dress code. Please come dressed in business casual attire each day that you are scheduled to volunteer.
LADIES: Slacks or a skirt with a nice blouse/top (no low necklines, short skirts, or form-fitting clothing, please).
GENTLEMEN: Slacks with a button-up shirt and tie. (A tie is desired, but not required.)
If you have further questions, contact your committee coordinator.
BECOME A VOLUNTEER!
To begin the volunteer process, contact the MÂCHÉ Volunteer Coordinator at volunteers@mache.org or call 763-717-9070. In a few days, you will be contacted by one of the committee coordinators, who will give you information about your position and instructions on how to complete your registration.
Do not register until after you receive instructions from your committee coordinator.
Thank you for being a part of our great MÂCHÉ volunteer team!

Threats to Education, Freedom, and Homeschooling in the US and Worldwide
Workshop Room: Lake Superior Ballroom
By: Alex Newman
American homeschoolers cannot and must not become complacent after several decades of freedom. Storm clouds are gathering rapidly on the horizon. From Ivy League law professors and government bureaucrats to international organizations and unions, the threat to education freedom and home education is real. Multiple governments have banned homeschooling in recent years. It is time to prepare by learning about the danger.
Handouts:Cultivating Curiosity Through Project-Based Learning
Workshop Room: Horizon Room 204 & 205

Handouts:It’s Homeschool, NOT School-at-Home
Workshop Room: Horizon Room 204 & 205
By: Jamie Erickson
Most mothers who choose to homeschool do so because we want to provide something different for our children than the other guys offer. We assume that simply taking the road less traveled will make all the difference. Our kids will be happy, healthy, and well-educated. The end. And yet, so often, we allow our past experiences and expectations of school to hitchhike into this new journey. “Real” school and “real” teachers are all we know. The traditional model, with all its formulas and gures, is burdensome. So many of the practices are necessary and good over there, but only because of the specific challenges of teaching a horde of children at the same time. Those same practices, when used here, constrict. Square peg. Round hole. Like an anchor threatening to pull you under, “real” school is ruining your homeschool. If you’re to survive and, better yet, thrive, you’ll need a new way of looking at teaching and learning at home.
