In the 1980s, the battle for educational freedom featured clear distinctions between parent-directed learning and the regimented program of the secular schools. Parents demanded and fought for the right to design an educational plan that satisfied the needs of the individual child and protected the solidarity of the family. Thirty years later, many of us are falling back into unhealthy practices that were programmed into us year after year by our own school experiences as young people.
